The word "lot" is a very interesting word indeed. One would think it synonymous with chance, but it is actually just the opposite. When we examine Scripture carefully, we discover that what appears to human eyes as random chance is actually the sovereign hand of God directing events according to His perfect will.

The biblical definition reveals this truth: "That which, in human speech, is called chance, hazard, fortune; but in strictness of language, is the determination of Providence." As we see in Numbers 26, the land was divided by lot, not by human decision or random chance, but by divine appointment.
