What does it mean to be a real friend?

I am finding that perhaps the application of "Friend" relates to me, not another. In other words, "Esteem other better than myself". Not hostile. I favor others, not myself. Like Jesus.

Friend - : one attached to another by affection or esteem/ one that is not hostile/a favored companion

I. First of all this morning I see we need more than one friend. Work friend, church friend, neighborhood friend, childhood friend, etc.

Interesting that in Scripture friend and companion are somewhat interchangeable terms.
