The text reveals his heart was not seeking truth, but rather he "tempted him." This lawyer approached Jesus not as a humble seeker of truth, but as one who sought to trap the Master in His words. His question sounds sincere on the surface - "Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" - but his motives were corrupt. This is the danger of approaching God's Word with a proud heart rather than a broken spirit. When we come seeking to justify ourselves rather than seeking God's truth, we will miss the way of salvation entirely.
