However, the majority of Israel simply received Him not, as verse 5 demonstrates. They went back to their ordinary lives - their farms, their businesses, their daily routines - treating the greatest invitation in human history as an inconvenience to be dismissed. This represents the tragic spiritual apathy that characterizes many who hear the gospel call. They are not necessarily hostile to Christ; they are simply too preoccupied with temporal matters to give serious consideration to eternal ones.
