I remember when I was 17 I took a kitchen tile from out manually with a sledge hammer. This was my first experience after working all day smacking tile with a 5 lb sledge hammer my hand was locked to the sledge. Someone should have told me to drink water. But the idea here is that sword hitting bone over and over that the impact wrecked his body.

That is a gruesome story but true. He fought so hard he couldn't let go of the sword. This tells me a couple things there are some things worth fighting for.
