1 John 2:1-2Loading... 2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

John addresses believers with tenderness, showing his pastoral heart. This phrase reflects a close spiritual relationship—John, as an elder, instructs and encourages his spiritual children. Those he led to Christ. If I lead someone to christ I have the spiritual responsibility. Children shows the relationship we should have.
