I. The Pattern of Trials for Young Families

Mary and Joseph had already endured nine months of questioning looks from friends and family. The stigma of an unexpected pregnancy, even one ordained by God, brought social pressure and whispered conversations. Then, when Mary was ready to deliver, they were forced to make an arduous journey to pay their taxes. This trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem would have taken a week in Mary's condition, covering approximately 80 miles of rough terrain. It's interesting that traditional pictures always depict Mary riding while Joseph walks - a testament to how Christianity introduced genuine respect for women and their welfare.
