While these teachings appear simple on the surface, there is perhaps no more difficult portion of Scripture to actually obey in our daily lives. The challenge lies not in understanding the words, but in living them out. If the meek shall inherit the earth, then we must be willing to drop our pride and humble ourselves before God and man. If we are to hunger and thirst after righteousness, we must be prepared to completely reorder our priorities, putting God's will above our own desires. To be pure in heart requires us to examine our motives and cleanse our inner man. To show mercy in order to obtain mercy means we must extend grace even when others don't deserve it.
