It's significant that John consistently calls these mighty works "signs" rather than simply miracles. This terminology points us to the deeper significance of each act. A sign is meant to direct our attention to something greater than itself. When we miss the "sign" and its significance, we reduce it to merely a miracle performed for our immediate benefit or comfort. Jesus addressed this tendency directly in John 6:26Loading..., where He pointed out that many followed Him not because they understood the spiritual significance of His works, but simply because they had been fed and satisfied physically.
